Senators’ Nick Cousins, Hayden Hodgson fined for incidents against Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators got into a heated bout in Quebec City on Tuesday. Today, the NHL took exception to a pair of incidents.
The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Ottawa forward Nick Cousins has been fined $2,148.44 for slashing Montreal winger Ivan Demidov at 7:22 in the third period.
Cousins was given a minor penalty on the play and ultimately finished with 14 PIM. He was given a misconduct at 9:21 in the third period, shortly after the end of the penalty kill. The 32-year-old is known for his physical play, registering 41 PIM and 15 points in 50 games last season. He also previously played for the Canadiens back in 2019-20, where he recorded 22 points in 58 games.
When asked about Demidov’s status last night, Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said he wasn’t worried about the Russian winger.
“He’s still being evaluated, so not right now,” St. Louis said minutes after Montreal’s 5-0 victory.
Demidov finished the game with two assists.
Furthermore, forward Hayden Hodgson was fined $2,018.23 for boarding forward Alex Newhook at 16:47 in the second period. Hodgson was given a major penalty for the incident. Hodgson played two games
Hodgson is expected to head back to the AHL’s Belleville Senators prior to the start of the season. He signed a one-year extension with Ottawa after registering five goals, 11 points and 156 penalty minutes in 43 games. Known for his tough, bruising presence, Hodgson has three points and 16 penalty minutes in nine career NHL games.
The Senators will head on the road to face the St. Louis Blues at 8:00 PM ET on Thursday night before finishing their preseason with a rematch against the Canadiens on Oct. 4. Ottawa will open the season on the road against Tampa Bay on Oct. 9 and Florida on Oct. 11 before hosting the Nashville Predators on Monday, Oct. 13.
