After the Ottawa Senators dropped their first-round playoff series, losing 4-2 on April 25th to complete the four-game sweep they suffered at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes, they’ll have to wait approximately five and half months for the start of the 2026-27 regular season. Forward Ridly Greig, however, will have to wait just a little bit longer than his teammates.

The NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Monday that Greig has been suspended for the first two games of the 2026-27 regular season as discipline for roughing Carolina defenseman Sean Walker during April 25th’s Game 4 loss.

The incident in question occured roughly midway through the second period of the game. With the teams still tied at zero, a skirmish broke out and Walker became engaged with Senators forward Warren Foegele. While Walker and Foegele were tied up, Greig skated over and threw a gloved jab at Walker before delivering an upper cut to his face that dropped him to a knee.

In the explanatory video released by the Department of Player Safety, it was stated that “Walker was fully engaged with a Senators player when Greig knowingly approaches them and elects to throw two sucker punches towards the defenseless Walker with sufficient force to merit supplemental discipline.”

The video also cited Greig’s disciplinary history, as he was suspended in 2021 for one preseason and one regular season game for a cross-check to the head of then-Winnipeg Jets forward Pierre-Luc Dubois.

In 77 games this season, the Lethbridge, Alberta native had 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points. He contributed just one assist in Ottawa’s four postseason games.

Greig, 23, was selected 28th overall by the Senators in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and just completed the first season of a four-year, $13 million deal with the Ottawa.
