The Ottawa Senators appear poised to lock in a key piece of their core on a medium-term contract extension.

The Senators announced on Thursday that the team and center Shane Pinto have agreed to terms on a four-year pact that would come with an annual price tag of $7.5 million.

The Senators first appeared to tease the news by tweeting out a picture of Pinto and general manager Steve Staios in a studio with microphones.

Pinto, a 25-year-old from Franklin Square, NY, is taking on the biggest role of his career so far this season. Pinto is averaging 19:23 of time on ice per game, which is higher than he got in any of his five previous seasons.

In terms of production, he’s making the most of the opportunity. Pinto’s netted eight goals and dished out six assists for 14 points in 17 games. That’s good enough to put him in a tie with Tim Stutzle for the team lead in goals and in third on the team in points behind Stutzle and Drake Batherson.

This new contract will exactly double Pinto’s salary, as he’s in the final year of a deal with a cap hit of $3.75 million. He’ll now officially join an impressive list of young Senators with some term remaining on their contracts.

Stutzle is signed through 2031, while Dylan Cozens is inked until 2030. Ridly Greig has three years left on his current contract, while Brady Tkachuk and Fabian Zetterlund each have two.

After snapping a long Stanley Cup Playoff appearance drought last season, Ottawa is off to a solid start in its bid to return to the postseason. The Sens currently occupy third place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 8-5-4.

Ottawa is set to host the surging Boston Bruins on Thursday night in a key divisional matchup before continuing the homestand against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.
