Ottawa Senators sign Anton Forsberg to three-year, $8.25-million extension
The Ottawa Senators and goaltender Anton Forsberg have agreed to a three-year contract extension with a $2.75-million cap hit.
It will be the first time in Forsberg’s career that he’ll be making more than $900,000 in a season, as the journeyman goaltender has signed six prior contracts in the NHL, all of them at six figures. He’s currently on a one-year deal with the Senators at $900,000.
Forsberg made a name for himself in the 2020-21 season with how often he was claimed on waivers, going from the Edmonton Oilers to the Carolina Hurricanes to the Winnipeg Jets and finally claimed by the Senators.
He’s had a career year with the Senators in 2021-22, with a 14-12-2 record and a .918 save percentage. It’s just the second time in his career he has played more than 10 games in a season.
The extension leaves a lot of question marks as to what the Senators crease will look like over the next couple seasons. It obviously means they’re committed to Forsberg, but they also have Matt Murray with two more years left on his deal after this season at a $6.25-million cap hit, and a prospect in Filip Gustavsson that they see as the future of the crease. This could mean that they aren’t done making moves in net this season.
