Senators sign Sam Ersson to two-year contract

An eventful offseason for goaltender Sam Ersson continued with the opening of the unrestricted free agency window on Wednesday, as he signed a two-year contract with the Ottawa Senators that carries a salary cap hit of $2.2 million.
The Ottawa Senators have signed Samuel Ersson to 2-year X $2.2 million AAV extension.
Ersson was traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of the deal that sent goalie Joseph Woll to the Flyers, and he was moved again from Toronto to Ottawa in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
The Senators did not tender Ersson, who was set to be a restricted free agent, a qualifying offer, but he will remain with the organization regardless with this new deal.

The Swedish net minder has spent the entirety of his playing career with the Flyers, drawing varying workloads in each of the past four seasons. Ersson was at his best in 2023-24, when he finished 10th in Calder Trophy voting as he posted a .890 save percentage and 2.82 goals against average.
Ersson was less serviceable in the following two seasons, especially this past year, as his .870 SV% and 3.12 GAA left Philadelphia in a dire goaltending situation before Dan Vladar’s hot streak helped power the team into the Stanley Cup Playoffs down the stretch.
With Ottawa, Ersson will have the opportunity to serve as the backup to his countryman Linus Ullmark, who struggled through a turbulent 2025-26 campaign but was excellent in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as Ottawa’s offense went cold in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Senators general manager Steve Staios has been busy throughout the offseason, acquiring winger William Eklund to fill the void left by the trade of former captain Brady Tkachuk, while also extending Jordan Spence to a new contract.
