Owen Tippett may be a potential target for teams

In January of 2024, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere signed winger Owen Tippett to an eight-year, $49.6 million contract extension with a cap hit of $6.2 million.
At the time, it was a big commitment to a talented player that came with some sticker shock, but as the salary cap has gone up, Tippett’s deal has begun to look like a long-term bargain for a player who has nearly reached 30 goals twice in his career.
But now, the Flyers have a new top-flight skill winger in Matvei Michkov, not to mention a veteran leader in Travis Konency as well as other promising young wingers like Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink. With Philadelphia having a surplus of controllable talent down the wings and not being in a contention window, could it make sense to move Tippett to improve the roster elsewhere at some point?
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by NHL insider David Pagnotta to discuss why Tippett and his long-term contract could make sense for contending teams.
Carter Hutton: I know you talked about little bit about Philadelphia and some of their players. Is that something we see them go to now, or is this like a wait and see if they start to self destruct a little bit?
David Pagnotta: Yeah, this is a wait and see. I mentioned yesterday that there are teams that view Owen Tippett as a potential target, but reiterating what I said yesterday, nothing is imminent. This is going to be a player that teams are keeping tabs on to see how he’s being deployed and what type of usage he’s getting. A lot of people view him as a legit second line threat that can put the puck in the net, but if the minutes are being allocated more toward some of the other players… I expect teams to eventually reach out.
