Flyers’ Helge Grans leaves preseason game with lower-body injury
Tough break for a veteran blueliner in the City of Brotherly Love.
On Thursday night, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Helge Grans left the team’s preseason game against the Boston Bruins with a lower-body injury.
It isn’t exactly known what Grans hurt or when the injury took place. The 24-year-old registered just two shifts in the contest, logging 1:29 of ice time. It didn’t take him long to make an impact in the game. He earned a secondary assist on Matvei Michkov’s goal just over four minutes into the first period. It was Grans’ first point of the preseason.
However, when the Flyers came out for the second period, Grans wasn’t on the bench.
It was Grans’ second appearance this preseason. He was in action during Philadelphia’s first game after training camp got this past Monday underway, registering a plus/minus of -2 in a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Washington Capitals.
Grans was trying to put forth a good showing this preseason to show the Flyers’ brass that he can still make it in the NHL. He hasn’t seen big-league ice since the 2024-25 campaign, when he played in six games for Philly, posting an assist and an even zero rating. He has spent the majority of his five years in North America in the American Hockey League. Once a second-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2020 NHL Draft, the Swedish rearguard is heading into his fourth season in the Flyers’ organization after he was traded to Philadelphia as part of the three-team deal that sent Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets in June 2023.
In 298 regular-season games in the AHL, Grans has notched 21 goals and 57 assists for 78 points, with another five points in 16 Calder Cup Playoff contests. He’s heading into the second season of his two-year contract, which he signed in May 2025. The deal was a two-way contract last season, with it turning into a one-way contract for 2026-27. The deal has a cap hit of $837,500.
The Flyers have one more preseason game, coming this Saturday at home against the Capitals, before opening the regular season on Sept. 30 against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins.
