Flyers select Jack Murtagh No. 40 overall in 2025 NHL Draft

The Philadelphia Flyers selected American forward Jack Murtagh with the 40th overall pick Friday night at The Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Murtagh spent the 2024-25 season with the United States National Team Development Program, where he racked up 22 goals and 31 assists for 53 points in 56 games. Murtagh also appeared in 21 games in the United States Hockey League (USHL), scoring 18 points in 24 games.
Murtagh proved this past season that he has a bag of tools at his disposal; one of the main traits you notice about Murtagh is his willingness to play in front of the net, his shot carries a lot of power, especially on his one-timer. He is a straight-line puck carrier and shooter who plays with great pace and intensity. The 17-year-old is a strong skater, and his speed and agility allow him to push the pace and attack defenders head-on.
Murtagh represented the United States at the CHL vs USNTDP inaugural challenge, where he had two goals in two games.
Murtagh was ranked No. 28 on Steven Ellis’ Final Top-120 rankings. “Murtagh is a skilled puck handler who can absolutely fire a shot and is a bit of a workhorse, too. I think he’s a good skater and has the hockey sense you’re looking for in a second or third-liner. I’ve been impressed in most of my viewings this year, and he’s one of the primary reasons to watch the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. He’s speedy, works hard and when you put it all together, he’s a difficult player to contain. I think he can become a middle-six forward.
The New York native is set to play for the Boston University Terriers next season in the NCAA. Other notable names that are set to join the team include Haoxi (Simon) Wang, Chicago Blackhawks prospects Sascha Boisvert and Jack Pridham as well as latest CHL recruit and Minnesota Wild draft pick Ryder Ritchie.
