Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson left Thursday’s game against the Boston Bruins after the second period with a lower-body injury.

Dan Vladar replaced Ersson between the pipes for the Flyers to begin the third period at TD Garden. The Flyers shared the reason for Ersson’s absence through their social media channels shortly thereafter.

Ersson, 26, allowed five goals on 20 shots through the first 40 minutes of Thursday’s game, with the Bruins taking a 5-2 lead into the third period. The Flyers ultimately lost the game by a 6-3 final score.

Factoring in his two periods of work on Thursday, Ersson has an 8-10-5 record and an .856 save percentage through 24 appearances this season. The 6’3″ goaltender is under contract through the end of the 2025-26 season at a $1.45 million cap hit.

The Flyers originally selected Ersson in the fifth round (No. 143 overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. The Falun, Sweden product came up through the Brynäs IF system in the SHL before making his NHL debut with the Flyers in the 2022-23 season.

In 134 career games over parts of four seasons with the Flyers, Ersson has compiled a 59-49-17 record to go along with seven shutouts and an .883 save percentage. He also represented Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025, as well as the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship.

With their loss to the Bruins, the Flyers now sit eight points outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture with a 24-20-9 record through 53 games in the 2025-26 season. They’ve now lost three consecutive games and have a -13 goal differential on the year.

It remains to be seen whether or not Ersson will be available when the Flyers return to action on Jan. 31 to play host to the Los Angeles Kings in Philadelphia. The Flyers have just three games remaining before the Olympic break.
