The Philadelphia Flyers have had one of the busier NHL offseasons, and kept it up with the signing of center Lane Pederson to a one-year, two-way contract in the opening hours of NHL Free Agency on Tuesday.

The deal will see the 27-year-old earn $775,000 while in the NHL and $525,000 in the minors.

A native of Saskatoon, SK, Pederson joins the Flyers as his sixth NHL organization, after previously spending time in the San Jose Sharks, Arizona Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Edmonton Oilers systems.

Through his four NHL stops, he has played a combined 71 games, scoring four goals and 11 points, but has yet to crest three points in a single season, hitting the mark three times, since making his NHL debut with the Coyotes in 2020-21.

However, while his NHL experience may be relatively limited, he has played parts of eight seasons in the AHL and is only two years removed from scoring a career-high 22 goals and 52 points in 66 games with the Bakersfield Condors, the Edmonton Oilers’ AHL affiliate, during the 2023-24 season.

Joining the Flyers, he reunited with head coach Rick Tocchet, who he briefly overlapped with while a member of the Canucks, before being claimed by the Blue Jackets on waivers in 2023.

With a new coach at the helm after dismissing former bench boss John Tortorella, the Flyers are looking to take the next step in their improvement in 2025-26, hoping to build on a 76-point season, which saw them finish eighth out of eight teams in the Metropolitan Division and miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Yet, expect Pederson to jump between the NHL Flyers and their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, after taking part in the organization’s NHL pre-season training camp, ahead of the NHL’s 2025-26 opening night on Oct. 7.
