The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Sunday that they have signed top prospect Porter Martone to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Martone, who delivered a stellar freshman season at the NCAA level with the Michigan State Spartans, was the team’s selection with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Daily Faceoff Associate Editor and Prospect Analyst Steven Ellis ranked Martone as the No. 1 prospect in the Flyers’ system in August, and he’s only cemented his standing as that in the past eight months.

“Martone is going to look like a steal at No. 6,” Ellis wrote. “He had arguably the best vision from the 2025 NHL Draft class and has some of the best offensive IQ, too. While his skating might lack and some scouts wish he’d be more physical, everyone agrees that he’s one of the smartest players in this draft class. He just understands the game and how to exploit opportunities.”

Michigan State’s season came to an end on Saturday with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, opening the door for Martone to make the decision to turn pro.

Despite the lack of a deep run in the NCAA tournament run, Martone’s time in East Lansing was nothing short of a massive success.

In 35 games, he found the back of the net 25 times and dished out 25 assists for 50 points, good enough to place him sixth in the country in scoring.

Martone also captained Team Canada at the U20 IIHF World Junior Championships this past winter, putting up nine points in seven games as the Canadians defeated Team Finland to capture the bronze medal.

Last year, Martone was one of the top players in the OHL, where he racked up 98 points in 57 games while captaining the Brampton Steelheads and leading them to the playoffs, where he put up another nine points in six games.

Now, Martone will have the opportunity to make his NHL debut this season before looking to make an impact in a full-time role with the Flyers in 2026-27.
