Flyers sign Trevor Zegras to four-year contract extension

The Philadelphia Flyers checked a massive box off their offseason to-do list on Wednesday night, as they announced an agreement with center Trevor Zegras on a four-year contract extension.
Zegras, who had previously filed for arbitration, will cost the Flyers $9.125 million against the salary cap and will be an unrestricted free agent upon the expiry of the contract.
“We’re thrilled to have Trevor committed to our organization for the next four years,” general manager Daniel Briere said via the team’s press release. “The growth he showed this past season, proving that he is the skilled player he entered the league as, reinforced our belief that he will be an impact player for the Flyers for the years to come.”
Zegras joined the Flyers after a trade with the Anaheim Ducks last summer, and after a pair of down years in Orange County, the new shade of orange proved to suit him well, as he racked up a career-high 26 goals on his way to a 67-point season, which also marked a career best.
The New York native provided valuable offensive flare and creativity to a Philadelphia roster largely lacking it otherwise, and his contributions were a major factor in the Flyers turning their season around and earning a surprising bid in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Once there, Zegras recorded 6 points in 10 games as Philly ousted its hated in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins before bowing out in the second round in a sweep at the hands of the eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
For the totality of his NHL career, Zegras has 93 goals and 160 assists for 253 points in 349 regular season appearances.
Briere has been one of the major players of the offseason, as he shocked the hockey world with a five-year, $90 million offer sheet to Ducks restricted free agent center Leo Carlsson, which Anaheim ultimately opted to match.
Zegras is the third Flyer of considerable import to ink a long-term deal with the club this summer, joining starting goalie Dan Vladar and winger Tyson Foerster.
