Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins unveil jerseys for 2023 Winter Classic

Break out the black and gold.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins have unveiled the uniforms they’re going to wear during the 2023 Winter Classic, set to take place Jan. 2, 2023 at Fenway Park in Boston.

The Penguins will sport an angular “P” logo they’ve never used in the past. It’s inspired by the Pittsburgh Pirates hockey team of the 1920s, with two simple stripes across the chest below the golden P. The numbers will match the logo’s color, also donning a golden look.

The Bruins have mashed a few different looks together for their uniform. According to the team, the Boston wordmark inspired to look like one used by the team during the 1940s. The Bruins’ old bear crest returns – one that fans have named after a certain popular substance from the television show Breaking Bad – for the first time since 1995, when it was last used as an alternate.

The Bruins have played in the Winter Classic three separate times, going 2-1 with wins in 2010 and 2019. The Penguins have played in it twice previously, winning the inaugural game in 2008. The Penguins have played in five outdoor games total with a 2-3 record, while Boston is 3-1.

St. Louis beat Minnesota in the last Winter Classic in a 6-4 victory. The NHL has another outdoor game scheduled for 2023, with the Carolina Hurricanes hosting the Washington Capitals in a Stadium Series contest at Carter-Finley Stadium on Feb. 18, 2023.

The NHL has hosted 35 outdoor games since 2003, with the 2014 Winter Classic between Toronto and Detroit holding the record for the highest-attended NHL game ever. Over 105,000 people showed up at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan to witness Toronto beat Detroit 3-2. Fenway Park, the host of the 2023 Winter Classic, held host to 38,112 fans when Boston beat Philadelphia 2-1 in overtime at the 2010 event.
