A young scorer has signed his first NHL contract.

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Atley Calvert to a two-year, entry-level contract. According to PuckPedia, the two-way contract has an NHL AAV of $930,000, with an annual signing bonus of $55,000 and a minor-league salary of $85,000.

Calvert has certainly had to earn himself a contract with the Penguins. After finishing up his junior hockey career with the Western Hockey League’s Moose Jaw Warriors, the undrafted winger signed an American Hockey League contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Pittsburgh’s primary affiliate, ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. His rookie season saw him split time between the Baby Pens and the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. He posted 14 points in 26 games in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, scoring 36 points in 38 games with the Nailers.

This season, the Moose Jaw native was in the AHL for the entire campaign. In 70 appearances, he registered 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points, helping the Penguins finish second in the AHL’s Atlantic Division. Calvert added another three goals and six points in 15 games in the Calder Cup Playoffs, as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Final, ultimately losing to the eventual champion Toronto Marlies.

In 96 regular-season games in the AHL, Calvert has potted 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points.

In his time with the Warriors, Calvert became a crucial scoring threat. In his final season, he scored 47 goals and 95 points, posting 20 points in 20 playoff games, helping Moose Jaw win the Ed Chynoweth Cup. At the 2024 Memorial Cup, he registered two assists as the Warriors made it to the semifinal, falling to the eventual tournament winners, the Saginaw Spirit.
