It’s the second defender the Devils have traded for this week. On Thursday, New Jersey acquired Brian Dumoulin from the Anaheim Ducks for Herman Traff and a conditional second-round pick.
Glass and Dumoulin join a d-corps mixed with youth and experience, headlined by Brett Pesce and Luke Hughes.
This is the third time Glass has been traded in his NHL career. The first-ever draft pick in the history of the Vegas Golden Knights was sent out of Sin City to the Nashville Predators for Nolan Patrick in July 2021. Then, this past August, the Winnipeg native was dealt to the Penguins, along with two draft picks, for Jordan Frasca.
Glass is in the final season of a two-year contract that he signed with the Predators in July 2023. The deal has a cap hit of $2.5 million.
While nothing has been confirmed, the timing of the trade is a coincidence, as it was announced earlier on Deadline Day that Devils blueliner Dougie Hamilton was going to miss that night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets due to a lower-body injury.
Glass appeared in 51 of the Penguins’ first 64 games this season. The 25-year-old has scored four goals and 11 assists for 15 points, the most he’s scored since notching a career-high 35 points with the Preds during the 2022-23 campaign. He has a plus/minus of -9 while averaging 13:25 of ice time.
Across seven seasons in the NHL, some of which were shortened due to injury, Glass has played in 238 games, scoring 33 goals and 53 assists for 86 points. He’s also appeared in three Stanley Cup Playoff games.
The Devils (33-24-6) are third in the Metropolitan Division, 16 points behind the Washington Capitals for first place. The Penguins (24-30-10) are last in the division, four points ahead of the Buffalo Sabres for the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
