Porter Martone has had an excellent start with the Flyers

It’s been a whirlwind season for Porter Martone, the 2025 first-round pick who went straight from the NCAA tournament into the heat of a playoff race for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Since signing his entry-level contract, Martone has four points in the first five games of his NHL career, including a game-winning goal in overtime to give the Flyers a crucial win over Detroit in a game between two Stanley Cup Playoff hopefuls.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by former NHL video coach Steve Peters to discuss how Martone has wasted no time in making his presence felt in the City of Brotherly Love.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I want to to you a little bit about Porter Martone, because you brought up the Michkov thing and it’s funny the Flyers on all he ‘Oh, he hates young players,’ talk. Well since Martone’s joined the team, granted it’s been five games, he’s fourth amongst forwards in time on ice in Philadelphia, and he passes at least the eye test from what I’ve been watching. Petey, what do you make of Martone’s first handful of games as an NHLer?
Steve Peters: He’s been outstanding, and the shift from being a young college player to playing in the NHL is immense. Like, we forget how big of a step that is. Porter Martone fits in, and he has not only been good he’s led this Philadelphia Flyers team in shots on goal since his arrival, and that’s hard to do because it’s hard to get to those, we call them the dirty areas, it’s hard to get there. But he’s going there willingly. He’s getting to the blue paint; he’s getting those opportunities. He’s playing with a little bit of jam. Honestly, he’s a special kid, and I think when you talk about that extra year in college and getting big and getting strong… huge for Porter Martone. I think he is going to be the future of this Philadelphia Flyers team. The fans are going to gravitate to him because he plays Flyer hockey. It’s tough along the wall, I can get pucks out, and I think you talked about the use with Denver Barkey, Alex Bump and even Michkov. I think this team is young and talented.
