“Shiann brings a veteran presence to our clubhouse,” general manager Mike Hirshfeld said in a release. “On top of being a leader, she has good size and she has this element of physicality. We liked what we saw from her last year. We are excited to integrate her even more this season.”
Darkangelo started the inaugural PWHL season with Boston, the team that selected her in the 12th round, 70th overall, in the first-ever draft. After playing 17 games, and less than 48 hours after participating in a historic game in her home state, the Brighton, Michigan native was traded to Ottawa for Lexie Adzija and Caitrin Lonergan.
Darkangelo played the final seven games with her new team, playing every game in the regular season. The 30-year-old registered just one assist coming while she was with Boston against Minnesota on Jan. 27. She ended up with a plus/minus of -6.
“I’m thrilled to be back in Ottawa,” Darkangelo said. “Playing in front of our incredible fans. I can’t wait to start our journey for the cup.”
The 2023-24 campaign was the ninth professional season for the former Quinnipiac standout. Darkangelo broke into the pro ranks in the Premier Hockey Federation–formerly the National Women’s Hockey League–with the Connecticut Whale in 2015. She made stops with the Kunlun Red Star and Toronto Furies (CWHL), one season on the PWHPA Dream Gap Tour, and the Buffalo Beauts and Toronto Six (PHF). Darkangelo was the captain for three seasons with the Six, leading the team to win the final Isobel Cup in 2023.
Darkangelo has represented her country a couple of times, winning gold with the U.S. at the 2011 IIHF Women’s Under-18 World Championship and the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship.
With the signing, Ottawa has 16 players on standard player agreements for the 2024-25 season, including talented veterans like captain Brianne Jenner and goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer.
