Quebec City to host 2027 Women’s World Championship, 2029 World Juniors

Two of the biggest tournaments in international hockey will be heading to Quebec.

On Thursday, Hockey Canada announced that Quebec City will be the host of the 2027 IIHF Women’s World Championship and the 2029 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The Videotron Centre is expected to be the ‘A’ arena for the tournaments, and couldn’t be a better setting for some of the most exciting hockey on the international stage. The passionate fans have made for great crowds in both men’s and women’s hockey. During the Professional Women’s Hockey League Takeover Tour last season, a sold-out crowd of 18,259 saw the Montreal Victoire take on the Ottawa Charge this past February.

“Hosting the IIHF Championships in Canada is a tremendous privilege,” Katherine Henderson, President and CEO of Hockey Canada, said in a release. “We are thrilled that our National Women’s Team and National Junior Team will be able to compete for medals on home soil in front of passionate crowds, and we look forward to welcoming spectators to Quebec in 2027 and 2029.”

The 2027 Women’s World Championship will mark the first time Quebec has hosted the tournament.

As of now, the 2027 Women’s Worlds will be the first time Canada has hosted the event since the U.S. stole the gold in Brampton in 2023. The location and dates of the 2026 WWC have yet to be determined, as negotiations are ongoing between the IIHF and PWHL regarding the tournament’s schedule to avoid conflict during the PWHL season. The league is already planning on taking an extended break for the Winter Olympics in February.

2027 will mark the 10th time Canada has hosted the Women’s Worlds. Team Canada has won gold six times, taking home silver on the other three occasions.

For the World Juniors, this will be the first time the tournament has been held in the province since Montreal co-hosted in 2017, when the United States won gold. Montreal was also the co-host in 2015. Quebec City held a select number of games during the 1977 tournament, but 2029 will mark the first time the city will be the sole host of the event.

The 2029 tournament will mark the 20th time Canada has either hosted or co-hosted the IIHF World Junior Championship, with Alberta also hosting the 2027 World Juniors. Eight of Canada’s record 20 gold medals in the tournament have come on home ice.
