New York Rangers’ forward Matthew Rempe was given a match penalty for a hit laid on New Jersey Devils’ forward Nate Bastian.

The incident occurred two minutes into the first period when Bastian reached for a puck wrapped around the boards in his own end and Rempe made contact exclusively with Bastian’s head. Blood immediately started leaking from Bastian’s nose and he stayed down on the ice.

Rempe was given a match penalty for the hit and ejected from the game.

This was Rempe’s third game of the season with the Rangers. Through 43 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, he’s scored eight goals and four assists for 12 points and 96 penalty minutes.

Meanwhile, Bastian has five goals and seven assists for 12 points through 53 games with the Devils this season. Through 216 NHL games, he’s scored 29 goals and 29 assists for 58 points in five seasons.
