As per Frank Seravalli, the New York Rangers have extended defenseman Will Borgen to a five-year, $4.1 million dollar contract.

Borgen has tallied three points in 17 games with the Rangers since being acquired via trade from the Seattle Kraken for Kaapo Kakko.

The 27-year-old Minnesota native notched a career-high of 25 points with the Kraken a year ago as he finished with three goals and 22 assists coming in 82 outings.

Borgen has spent the past four seasons with the Kraken after being claimed from the Buffalo Sabres in the 2021 Expansion Draft. The Sabres originally selected him 92nd overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.

According to PuckPedia, the veteran rearguard has a $2.7-million annual average value and would have become an unrestricted free agent in July, however, this extension keeps him in The Big Apple for the next five years.

Back in December when the Rangers acquired Borgen, Frank Seravalli spoke on the addition and what it brings to New York. “Will Borgen was in demand not too long ago on our trade target board,” Seravalli said. “He’s not a sexy or flashy player, he’s not going to wow you with any one part of his game, but he’s reliable, he’s got some size, he’s got better-than-average feet, and I think he’s a guy who can help quiet down the noise in the Rangers’ own end, which is exactly what they needed at this exact moment in time.”

The Rangers sit fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 24-20-4 record through 48 games and sit one point back of the Columbus Blue Jackets. New York is slated to face Martin Necas and the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday in a matinee game.
