The New York Rangers will officially receive the Dallas Stars‘ 2026 first-round pick from the Carolina Hurricanes to complete last summer’s K’Andre Miller trade.

At the time, the Hurricanes dealt defensive prospect Scott Morrow, a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to land Miller in a bid to upgrade their blue line.

The conditions on the first-round pick dictated that it would be the better of the two 2026 first Carolina owned, their own and that of Dallas, unless one or both of the picks landed in the top 10 of the draft.

With the Stars ousted from the playoffs at the hands of the Minnesota Wild while the Hurricanes advanced to the second round with a sweep of the Ottawa Senators, the Stars’ pick is now guaranteed to be higher, meaning it will officially transfer to the Rangers.

Miller has lived up to the billing in Raleigh as an upgrade on Carolina’s second pairing, as he tallied 8 goals and dished out 29 assists for 37 points in 72 games played while skating an average of 22:23 of time on ice per game.

The first-round pick from the 2018 NHL Draft has anchored a strong defensive pairing alongside veteran Sean Walker, and he led all Hurricanes defensemen in points in their first-round win.

For the Rangers, Morrow failed to deliver on the hopes that he would be able to jump over as a full-time NHL blueliner after getting a taste of playoff action with the Canes. The Connecticut native had 6 points, all assists, in 29 appearances with the Rangers along with 19 points in 34 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.

Rangers general manager Chris Drury has a plethora of picks to either use as trade chips or add to his prospect pipeline. New York owns its own first-round pick as well as Dallas’, Carolina’s second-rounder from the Miller trade, and four separate third-round picks.
