The New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes have looked up on a minor-league trade.

New York is sending defenseman Tarmo Reunanen to Carolina in exchange for forward Maxim Letunov.

Reunanen was selected by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2016 NHL draft with one of the picks that the team acquired in the trade that sent Keith Yandle to New York from the Arizona Coyotes.

In 40 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL this season, Reunanen has two goals and 17 points. He played four games with the Rangers in 2020-21, which was the first season of his career spent in North America.

Letunov was selected in the second round of the 2014 NHL draft by the St. Louis Blues and was traded one year later to the Coyotes in exchange for Zbynek Michalek. Another year later, Letunov was moved to the San Jose Sharks for a pair of draft picks. He inked a one-year, $750,000 deal with the Hurricanes as a free agent last summer.

In 60 games with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL this season, Letunov has 13 goals and 23 points. He played three games for the Sharks in 2019-20 and scored one goal.

For those wondering about how a deal is being made after the NHL’s trade deadline, teams can still make trades, but those involved aren’t eligible to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
