A historic venue is reportedly hosting the National Hockey League’s premier outdoor event next year.

On Tuesday, it was revealed to the Chicago Sun-Times that the 2025 NHL Winter Classic will take place at Wrigley Field, with the Chicago Blackhawks hosting their longtime rivals, the St. Louis Blues.

An official announcement on the 16th edition of the event is expected to come from the league on Wednesday.

It is the second time the home of the Chicago Cubs will be the home of the New Year’s event. The first time the Hawks played a home game outdoors came in 2009, when they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. This is the fourth venue to be the home of an NHL outdoor game in two different seasons. Other two-time stadiums include Fenway Park, Heinz Field and Commonwealth Stadium.

This will also be the fifth time former combatants have gone at it outside twice. The Blues and Blackhawks met at Busch Stadium in 2017, with St. Louis coming out on top. Other former matchups include the Detroit Red Wings v. Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins v. Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers v. New York Islanders, and Pittsburgh Penguins v. Flyers.

It will be the record seventh outdoor game for the Blackhawks. They have not played since the 2019 Winter Classic, when they lost to the Boston Bruins at Notre Dame Stadium. Chicago is 1-5 all-time in outdoor games. Their only win came back when they played the Pittsburgh Penguins at Soldier Field during the 2014 Stadium Series.

The Blues have played just twice outside. Along with the game in 2017, St. Louis played the Minnesota Wild in the coldest NHL regular season game on record in 2022, with the Blues coming away with a 6-4 win.

The Seattle Kraken hosted the Vegas Golden Knights in this year’s Winter Classic, with the Kraken shutting out the reigning Stanley Cup Champs at T-Mobile Park.
