Arizona State Sun Devils captain Josh Doan will forego his final two years of NCAA eligibility to an entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes, PHNX Sports‘ Craig Morgan reported Thursday.

Doan, 21, wrapped up his sophomore year with the Sun Devils this past weekend. The six-foot-one forward collected 16 goals and 38 points in 39 games with ASU during the 2022–23 season.

The Coyotes originally selected Doan in the second round (No. 37 overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. The Scottsdale, AZ product is the son of Coyotes icon Shane Doan and is the highest-drafted NHL prospect in the history of the Sun Devils Division I NCAA program, which also plays out of Mullett Arena.

Doan went unselected in his draft year but emerged as a legitimate NHL prospect with the USHL’s Chicago Steel in 2020–21, leading the Coyotes to take him with their second pick of the following draft.

As a freshman with the Sun Devils in 2021–22, Doan finished third in team scoring with 12 goals and 37 points in 35 games. He got off to a slower start in 2022–23 but ultimately finished the season on a nine-game point streak, recording 10 goals and 16 points over that span.

Doan will have plenty of opportunity to a crack the lineup of a rebuilding Coyotes team, although it’s possible he starts out with the American Hockey League’s Tucson Roadrunners to give a boost to their playoff chances.

After Dylan Guenther and J.J. Moser, Doan will become the third member of the Coyotes’ 2021 NHL Draft class to sign with the team — and Doan won’t have to go far from his old college dressing room to settle in with his Coyotes teammates.

The Coyotes will return to action at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening to take on the Vancouver Canucks at Mullett Arena.
