Women’s hockey has had a new landmark moment.

Mikyla Grant-Mentis has reportedly signed a one-year contract, worth $100,000 CDN, with the Premier Hockey Federation’s Buffalo Beauts, Chris Johnston reported Friday.

Grant-Mentis, 23, spent last season with the Toronto Six, wherein 19 games she scored 13 goals and 30 points. She’s no stranger to the Buffalo market having signed with the Beauts out of college in 2019-20 when the league was still known as the National Women’s Hockey League.

The native of Brampton, Ontario played her college hockey at Merrimack College where she scored 56 goals and 117 points in 137 games. Between both the NWHL and PHF, she’s scored over a point per game.

Her 2020-21 season with the Six saw her secure more than just the league MVP in the shortened season. She also led the league in scoring (five goals) and points (nine) playing in six games.

Hockey runs in the family as her twin brother, Marquis Grant-Mentis, is playing for the FPHL’s Columbus River Dragons where he’s scored 21 points in 23 games.

Free agency in the PHF opened on May 1 with a record salary cap of $750,000, with a floor of 75% ($562,500). For the first time, players were allowed to sign two-year contracts, ones that also included signing bonuses of up to 10 percent of their contracts for the first time.

“The new standard player agreements include a comprehensive benefits plan with medical coverage from Aetna, plus dental and vision coverage through MetLife,” the PHF said. “One hundred percent of the premiums will be paid for the players and they will have no deductibles. Players also have the ability to top up coverage to add spouse/children to the policy, as applicable.”
