Rangers agree to terms with Matt Rempe on two-year extension

A fan favorite will be sticking with the New York Rangers for at least two more years.

As first reported to Larry Brooks of The New York Post and later confirmed by the team, Rempe and the Rangers have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension.

Peter Baugh of The Athletic reported that the cap hit will be $975,000.

Rempe, a six-foot-nine native of Calgary, skated in 42 games this past season, recording three goals and five assists for eight points.

As one of the top enforcers in the NHL today, Rempe racked up 67 penalty minutes and dropped the gloves four times this season according to HockeyFights.

That was down from the five fights he partook in during his 17-game stint in the NHL during the 2023-2024 campaign.

Once finalized, this agreement will prevent Rempe from hitting restricted free agency and potentially being presented with an offer sheet on July 1.

The Rangers are coming off of a disappointing season in which they missed the playoffs altogether just a year removed from winning the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the NHL’s best record in 2023-2024.

The team moved on from head coach Peter Laviolette and brought in former assistant coach and two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins Mike Sullivan to man the bench.

It promises to be an eventful offseason for New York, as the club has already dealt longtime star winger Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks.

With Rempe signed, general manager Chris Drury will have about $14 million remaining in cap space to maneuver, according to Puckpedia, with restricted free agent Will Cuylle still in need of a deal.
