Ottawa Senators defenseman Nick Jensen has undergone surgery on a lower-body injury, the Ottawa Citizen’s Bruce Garrioch reported on Monday.

According to Garrioch, the 34-year-old underwent the operation in New York City, which focused on a lower-body injury he had dealt with through the second half of the Senators’ regular season and their first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance in eight seasons.

While there appears to be no timeline for Jensen’s return, he told media at the end of the season exit interviews that he was hopeful to be ready for September’s training camp.

In 2025-26, the Senators will look to string together consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since 2013.

Playing a key role in Ottawa’s push to the playoffs and in the series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jensen waited to go under the knife, having consulted with team medical staff, as he assessed treatment options for his injury.

Through the regular season, Jensen finished with three goals and 21 points in 71 games, and averaged 20:13 per game, often playing alongside Thomas Chabot on the blueline. In the first round series against the Leafs, his average ice time slightly increased, jumping to 20:56.

Coming to the Senators last summer in a trade with the Washington Capitals that sent Jakob Chychrun the other way, he quickly established himself as a key piece on the blueline and will likely continue in a similar role should he return in time for training camp.

“Nick is an absolute warrior,” Steve Staios, Ottawa’s president of hockey operations and general manager, said on May 5. “To be able to continue to perform at the level he did with the injury he was dealing with…it’s the character of the individual.”

Originally selected 150th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2009 NHL Draft, Jensen has scored 22 goals and 155 points in 633 NHL games, suiting up for the Red Wings and Capitals, before his time in Ottawa.
