Roger McQueen to wear Lightning McQueen’s No. 95 with Ducks

The legend of Roger McQueen continues to grow.

Two days after getting selected 10th overall by the Anaheim Ducks – and subsequently flown out to Disneyland via helicopter – Roger McQueen is set to wear 95 when he suits up for the NHL club.

McQueen is not believed to be related to the fictional racecar. The two did get to meet while the first round was still taking place, drawing love from around the internet.

According to Hockey-Reference, McQueen will become the second player to don the 95 once he makes his NHL debut. Vinni Letteri wore it during a short stint with the team during the 2020-21 campaign. No player has ever worn a higher number in franchise history.

The hockey-playing McQueen had 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 17 games. A back injury limited his game action, but many scouts still saw him as a top 10 prospect regardless. The year prior, McQueen had 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points in 53 games. McQueen is expected to return to the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings for 2025-26, but he could wear 95 as early as the NHL preseason.

McQueen is the seventh player the Ducks have taken in the top 10 of the NHL Draft since 2019. Others include Beckett Sennecke, Leo Carlsson, Pavel Mintyukov, Mason McTavish, Jamie Drysdale and Trevor Zegras.

Lightning McQueen is a seven-time Piston Cup champion, having won over 93 races before retiring in 2017. He is most known for sticking his tongue out to help create a three-way tie with racing legends Chick Hicks and The King in 2005.

The Ducks will begin development camp on June 30, featuring a variety of off-ice workouts and on-ice skills development. The Ducks have not released a roster for the event, but most of the 10 players selected by the Ducks this weekend are expected to participate.
