A couple of well-known faces are joining the front office in Manhattan.
On Monday, New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury announced that the team has hired former NHLer Ryane Clowe as the team’s new assistant general manager. Also, former Ranger Blake Wheeler was named hockey operations adviser, while Jim Sullivan and Ryan Martin were promoted to both assistant and associate general managers, respectively.

Clowe comes to New York less than a day after he announced that he was leaving his role as assistant general manager of the San Jose Sharks. He had been with the club in a management role for just over a year. Prior to returning to San Jose, the longtime forward was a co-senior advisor and hockey operations advisor with the Rangers for three seasons. Along with his management resume, the St. John’s, N.L. native was the assistant coach of the New Jersey Devils for one season, serving part of a season as head coach of the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers.
Wheeler steps into his first job post-playing. The Plymouth, Minn. native retired this past July after a successful 16-year NHL career that saw him make stops with the Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets and Rangers. It was with the Blueshirts in 2023-24 that he played a guiding role in helping the team win the Presidents’ Trophy. In 1,172 regular-season NHL games, Wheeler scored 321 goals and 622 assists for 943 points.
Sullivan is heading into his 17th season with the Rangers. In 2021, he was named the vice president of hockey strategy and data management. Prior to that, he was the director of player care and development, analytics and hockey technology for seven seasons.
Martin, who is entering his fifth season with the Original Six franchise, has been both the assistant GM and GM of the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers’ American Hockey League affiliate. Along with previously holding the role of assistant GM of the Detroit Red Wings for 11 years, Martin was also the GM for Team USA at the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship.
