Oilers sign Ryan Shea to five-year contract

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with unrestricted free agent defenseman Ryan Shea, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday afternoon.
According to Friedman, Shea’s new contract with the Oilers carries a $5 million annual cap hit. The deal will run through the end of the 2030-31 season, at which point Shea will again be scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.

Shea, 29, collected six goals and 35 points while averaging 18:53 of ice time in 80 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2025-26 regular season. The 6’1″, left-shot defenseman also appeared in six playoff games with the Penguins, collecting one assist and logging 16:50 of ice time.
The Shea signing was reported in the wake of the Oilers trading veteran defender and alternate captain Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks earlier on Wednesday. That move cleared the entirety of Nurse’s $9.25 million cap hit from the Oilers’ payroll and opened up the flexibility for them to sign Shea.
The Chicago Blackhawks originally selected Shea in the fourth round (No. 121 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The Milton, Mass. product spent his developmental years with the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms before heading to Northeastern University, where he played from 2016 to 2020.
Unsigned by the Blackhawks, Shea joined the Dallas Stars as a free agent in 2020. He spent three seasons with the AHL’s Texas Stars but never managed to get into a game with Dallas before leaving to sign with the Penguins in 2023.
Shea appeared in his first 31 NHL games with the Penguins in 2023-24 and skated in 39 more the following year. He finally emerged as a full-time NHLer in Pittsburgh this past season, but his performance also priced the Penguins out of the market for his services.
Through 150 career NHL games over parts of three seasons in Pittsburgh, Shea has collected nine goals and 41 points.
