The San Jose Sharks are one of the youngest teams in NHL, and they’ve just made a decision that will keep them that way for the rest of the season.

Defenseman Sam Dickinson, 19, received his housing letter to stay in San Jose on Tuesday, per Max Miller, securing his place on the Sharks for the remainder of the season.

Dickinson was selected 11th overall by San Jose in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. In 10 games with the Sharks so far this season, Dickinson has a goal with zero assists, to go along with six penalty minutes and a minus-two plus/minus rating.

The Toronto native played three seasons with the OHL’s London Knights prior to joining the Sharks, helping them win the Memorial Cup for the 2024-25 season. Last season with the Knights, Dickinson put up remarkable production for a defenseman, notching 29 goals and 62 assists for 91 total points in 55 regular season games. In the postseason, he scored nine goals and tallied 22 assists for 31 points in just 17 games.

The decision to keep Dickinson in the NHL is not only a big one for San Jose, but also for Team Canada at the upcoming World Junior Championships in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota. Dickinson has a year left of eligibility to play in the tournament, and would’ve been a heavy favorite to make the roster if he wasn’t busy playing for the Sharks. In last year’s World Juniors, Dickinson had zero goals and two assists in five games, as Canada failed to medal for the second consecutive year.

The Sharks currently sit second-last in the Pacific Division, with 11 points in 13 games. They’ll hit the road to play the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday, and then return home to play the Winnipeg Jets on Friday and the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
