A solid secondary scorer with grit is going to the Bay Area.

After NHL free agency opened on Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks signed forward Mason Marchment to a new contract.

It’s a notable signing and emotional move for Marchment. His late father, Bryan, was a member of the Sharks from 1997 to 2003. Even after his career ended, he stayed in San Jose, working for the team in its hockey operations department.

Mason is receiving a nice little pay bump. He had come to the end of his four-year contract, which he signed with the Dallas Stars in July 2022. That deal had a cap hit of $4.5 million. Marchment joins a rising Sharks team that was knocking on the door of qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, but ultimately tailed off in the second half of the year. Yet with players like Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and others, the Sharks have more than enough talent to play well into the spring in the near future.

Marchment was a solid secondary piece with the Stars for a few years, but was traded to the Seattle Kraken last June for a pair of draft picks. After a tough start to the season, he was on the move again, as the Columbus Blue Jackets acquired the Uxbridge, Ont. native for two more draft picks in December.

He would go on to be part of a Blue Jackets team that made a valiant effort to go from the bottom of the Eastern Conference to the postseason. In 39 games with Columbus, Marchment scored 15 goals and 32 points. However, the team missed out on the last Wild Card spot by a few points.

In 370 regular-season games in the NHL, Marchment has scored 95 goals and 139 assists for 234 points, with another 19 points in 59 postseason contests.
