The San Jose Sharks have added some young depth to their defense.

The team announced on Thursday that they have signed defenseman Philip Sinn to a two-year, entry-level contract.

Sinn, 22, spent most of last season playing for EHC Red Bull Munchen of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), the top professional hockey league in Germany. In 35 games for Munchen, he put up a goal and two assists for three points. He then went pointless in 11 postseason games for them.

The Mannheim, Germany native also notched no goals and four assists in seven games last season for ESV Kaufbeuren in the DEL2, which is Germany’s second-tier hockey league.

Sinn played the majority of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons with EC Red Bull Salzburg of the ICE Hockey League, which is the top hockey league in Austria. With Salzburg, he played a combined total of 62 games and registered two goals and 11 assists for 13 points. He also played a combined 32 postseason games with Salzburg, putting up a goal and four assists and helping them win the championship in each of 2024 and 2025.

Internationally, Sinn represented Germany at this year’s IIHF World Championship, in which he went scoreless over five games. He also played for Germany at the 2023 and 2024 IIHF World Junior Championships, where he played a total of 10 games and had two goals and five assists for seven points.

At 6’2″ and 194 pounds, Sinn is a big-bodied defenseman who should continue to grow into his frame.

In a statement released by the Sharks, general manager Mike Grier commented on the team’s acquisition of Sinn.

“Phillip is a young defenseman who has experience playing high level hockey, and competing against some of the best players in the world in international competition,” said Grier. “We are happy to have him in our organization as he continues to develop.”
