The San Jose Sharks will be without Timothy Liljegren for Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken due to an upper-body injury.

Liljegren sustained the injury during the Sharks’ morning skate on Saturday ahead of the game. What caused the injury is not known, but news came out shortly after the morning skate that he won’t be in the lineup due to the injury.

At this point in time, it’s not known how long Liljegren is expected to be out of the lineup. He was examined by the team after the game, so an update should be expected later, but for now his status for Tuesday’s game is not known. That said, the Sharks don’t play again after that until next Saturday, so it’s possible that they give him more rest on Tuesday so that he has a full week off to recover.

Liljegren also missed three games in October due to an upper-body injury. It’s unclear if the injury he sustained today is similar to the one he sustained earlier this season.

Liljegren has struggled offensively this season, getting only four assists in 28 games, and having gone the last 15 games without a point. However, he has been better defensively, with a -0.014 5v5 regularized adjusted plus-minus expected goals against per 60 minutes, which is the third-best among Sharks defenseman.

With Liljegren out of the lineup, Vincent Iorio will replace Liljegren on the bottom pair alongside Sam Dickinson. That pairing has held goals even at 1-1 and has a 34.29% 5v5 expected goal share in 35:19 of ice time this season. Iorio has one assist in 11 games this season.

The Sharks currently sit in fifth in the Pacific Division with a 17-15-3 record, good enough for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. They’ll look to bounce back from Thursday’s 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars when they host the Kraken on Saturday at 7 p.m. PST.
