The Seattle Kraken have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with two-time Stanley Cup champion goaltender Matt Murray, the club announced Tuesday afternoon.

Murray, who won the Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, most recently spent three seasons in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. The 6’5″ goaltender went 1-1-0 in two games with the Leafs during the 2024-25 regular season and also made a brief appearance with the club in the 2025 playoffs.

According to the club’s press release, Murray’s new contract with the Kraken carries a $1 million NHL cap hit.

A third-round pick (No. 83 overall) of the Penguins in 2012, Murray made his NHL debut with the club in the 2015-16 season and came out of nowhere to supplant Marc-Andre Fleury as Pittsburgh’s starting goaltender during their run to their fourth Stanley Cup.

The following year, with his Calder Trophy eligibility still intact, Murray won 32 out of his 49 games during the regular season before forming more of a traditional tandem with Fleury in the playoffs. In the end, Murray won the Stanley Cup yet again that spring — his second as a rookie with the Penguins.

In the wake of his initial success with the Penguins, Murray struggled with injuries in subsequent seasons and was ultimately traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2020. He took part in just 47 games over two seasons in Ottawa before being flipped to the Leafs in 2022.

Through 275 career games over parts of nine seasons with the Penguins, Senators, and Maple Leafs, Murray has put together a 147-87-24 record and a .910 save percentage. The Thunder Bay product has also appeared in 52 playoff games with Pittsburgh and Toronto, going 29-21 with six shutouts and a .920 save percentage.

With Murray now in the fold, the Kraken have six goaltenders under contract for the 2025-26 season: Joey Daccord, Philipp Grubauer, Murray, Victor Ostman, Niklas Kokko, and Kim Saarinen.
