Torrent sign Abbey Murphy to two-year contract
One of the biggest stars in the game has inked her first pro contract.
On Wednesday, the Seattle Torrent announced that the team has signed forward Abbey Murphy to a two-year contract.
Murphy was taken by the Torrent with the No. 2 pick in the 2026 PWHL Draft. The 24-year-old comes to the league after establishing herself as a superstar in the collegiate and international ranks. Her tenacity on the ice makes her a force to be reckoned with, while her skill makes Murphy one of the most dangerous players in women’s hockey.
In a release, Murphy explained how excited she is to get started with her new team.
“I’m incredibly grateful and excited to officially start this journey in Seattle,” Murphy said. “Getting to spend time in the city this summer, meet our fans and get a feel for the community made me even more excited to call Seattle home. I can’t wait to take the ice at Climate Pledge Arena with this group and play in front of the loudest and best fans in the league. I’m ready to get to work.
At the University of Minnesota, Murphy became the standard for what it means to be an efficient goal scorer. In her final four seasons as a Golden Gopher, she finished second in the NCAA in goals, posting three straight 30-goal campaigns. In her super senior season, the Evergreen Park, Ill., native set career highs in goals (40) and points (66), ending up second behind Quinnipiac’s Kahlen Lamarche in goals and second behind Wisconsin’s Lacey Eden in overall scoring.
Murphy left Minneapolis as the program’s all-time leading goal scorer, notching an incredible 143 goals in 170 games. Along with 118 assists, her 261 points place her second behind former PWHLer Hannah Brandt. A two-time Patty Kazmaier Award finalist, Murphy helped the Gophers win the WCHA Championship in 2023, helping her team reach the Frozen Four in 2023 and 2025.
Murphy is also one of the most decorated players under 25. She has won gold twice at both the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship and the IIHF Women’s World Championship, and she was a catalyst for the Americans to win gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics this past February. She also has two silver medals at the Women’s Worlds, and one from the U-18s and Olympics.
