How concerning is Sergei Bobrovsky’s recent play?

The game may have been closer than the score suggested, but the Calgary Flames earned their fourth straight win with a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Monday night.
Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 of 32 shots faced, but two of the goals he gave up came in a two-minute span midway through the first period, as well as a power-play goal early in the second frame.
Bobrovsky, 38, has given up at least three goals in eight of his nine games with the Leafs. He now carries an .897 save percentage (SV%) and 3.09 goals against average (GAA) with a 2.7 goals saved above expected (GSAx).
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss Bobrovsky’s start with the Leafs and whether the Concern-O-Meter should be dialed up to a 10.
Tyler Yaremchuk: There’s a bit of a conversation in Toronto. Is there a goaltending controversy? Bobrovsky’s save percentage dipped below .900, while Anthony Stolarz has looked excellent this year.
On a scale of one to 10 — one being not concerned, 10 being very concerned — how worrisome is this little rough patch for Bobrovsky?
Carter Hutton: Six? I’m not overly concerned … like I am, but I’m not. I just think at some point, you’re going to run into the age factor coming into play. No one is invincible forever, no one really outruns the game of time when it comes to goaltending in the NHL.
But I’m not overly concerned because Stolarz can spot starts and he’s been the guy before. Now it’s just that happy medium of, “is Stolarz playing better because he’s insolated by Bobrovsky having the majority of the starts?” But if the roles were reversed and now Bobrovsky gets spotted starts, does that help him?
I think with two aging goalies who are prone to injury, you have to be careful with how you do this. It will always come back to how they insolate their goalies and play team defense as a corp. They can always try to outscore their problems. I am concerned, but my thing is, I just think this is Bobrovsky. If there’s a guy who is going to bounce back … he’s going to play big in certain moments.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I think I’ll go with a three. He’s had some good games this year, but this isn’t a guy who they’re just throwing out game after game and it’s been garbage, garbage, garbage. He has some good starts. I was digging into MoneyPuck and looking at goals saved above expected. There’s been 46 goalies with at least five games played, and he’s 22nd among goals saved above expected per 60.
I don’t think there’s major cause for concern, but you do bring up the age, and you never know when Father Time is going to take a big swing and knock a guy down. Also, last year wasn’t good for Bobrovsky, his save percentage fell 29 points year-over-year compared to 2024-25.
I don’t think it’s a zero, I’m not going to simply chalk this up to a couple of bad starts early in the year, but it’s something to keep an eye on, and luckily for the Leafs, Stolarz has given them really good starts in the meantime. I’ll say it’s a three out of 10.
