Sharks Trade Hoffman to Panthers for Draft Picks

The San Jose Sharks have traded Mike Hoffman and a 2018 seventh-round pick (No.207 overall) to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a 2019 second-round pick, 2018 fourth-round pick (No.123) and a 2018 fifth-round pick (No.139).

Just a few hours after acquiring Hoffman from the Ottawa Senators, the Sharks have flipped him back to the Atlantic Division.

According to The Athletic’s Craig Custance, Panthers’ General Manager Dale Tallon talked to the Senators about Hoffman last week but the price was too high. Tallon spoke to the Sharks last night and ironed a deal out. Ottawa Sun columnist Bruce Garrioch added that Tallon didn’t offer the package to Ottawa that he gave to San Jose.

It was a good day for Sharks’ General Manager Doug Wilson, who was able to unload Mikkel Boedker’s contract and stockpile a plethora of draft picks.

A list of what all three teams acquired today:

Sharks:

  • – Cody Donaghy (D)
  • – 2019 2nd Round Pick
  • – 2018 4th Round Pick
  • – 2018 5th Round Pick
  • – 2020 5th Round Pick

Senators:

  • – Mikkel Boedker (LW)
  • – Julius Bergman (D)
  • – 2020 6th Round Pick

Panthers:

  • – Mike Hoffman (LW)
  • – 2018 7th Round Pick

As mentioned the first time that Hoffman was traded, the 28-year-old winger ranks 24th in the NHL in goals (104) and 44th in points (224) over the last four seasons. He joins a talented top-6 in Florida that includes Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau, Vincent Trocheck, Evgeny Dadonov and Nick Bjugstad (on occasion).

Hoffman brings some baggage with him to Florida. Last week, Senators’ captain Erik Karlsson‘s wife, Melinda, accused Hoffman’s girlfriend, Monika Caryk, of harassment and filed for an order of protection against her. Tallon is obviously comfortable with his leadership group and believes that this won’t be an issue with his team.
