Sources: Penguins, Bryan Rust agree to terms on 6-year extension

That didn’t take long.

Just days after Bryan Rust professed his love for Pittsburgh, the Penguins locked up one part of their three-headed monster class of pending free agents.

Sources tell Daily Faceoff the Penguins agreed to terms on a six-year contract extension with Rust on Saturday that is expected to come in around $5.2 million per season. The deal was not yet signed on Saturday night and thus not official.

Rust, 30, has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh since being selected in the third round (80th overall) back in 2010.

He is coming off a career year, racking up 24 goals and a career-best 58 points in just 60 games. Rust ranked 45th in points per game (0.97) this season among skaters with at least 60 games played.

Rust indicated on Pittsburgh’s break-up day that he simply wanted to be compensated “fairly.” He is coming off a four-year, $14 million deal worth $3.5 million per season.

Rust’s new deal is expected to total nearly $31 million.

“I think for me, it’s just getting to a point where I feel like I’ve gotten what I’ve earned and what I feel like I’m worth,” Rust told reporters. “I feel like I’ve played to a higher level than what my contract has said the last few years. Moving forward, just getting something’s that’s fair and I feel like that will benefit me and my family moving forward.”

With Rust signed, the Penguins can now turn their attention to fellow pending free agents Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin, in an offseason full of difficult decisions to make.
