Sources have told Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli that the Vancouver Canucks have made significant progress in signing Elias Pettersson to a long-term contract extension.

Seravalli said the deal is believed to be an eight-year deal, and that it could be finalized in the coming days.

Pettersson is on pace to break the 100-point barrier for the second consecutive season. The Swedish forward has 29 goals and 75 points in 61 games, another strong effort after setting a personal best of 102 points last year.

Drafted fifth overall in 2017, Pettersson is in the final year of his three-year contract worth $7.35 million per season. The 25-year-old is one of the best young forwards in the NHL today, registering 398 points in 386 career games – all with the Canucks.

Pettersson’s play is a big reason for Vancouver’s success in 2023-24. The team already has J.T. Miller signed until 2030, with Quinn Hughes under contract until 2026 and goaltender Thatcher Demko until 2026.

The 2024 offseason is set to be an important one for the team, with four defensemen set to become UFAs and one – Filip Hronek – expected to get a raise as a pending RFA. Elias Lindholm, Teddy Bleuger and Sam Lafferty are the forwards seeking new deals for 2024-25, as well.

According to CapFriendly, the Canucks have a projected cap space of $35.536 for next season, with at least eight roster spots still to be determined. Pettersson’s contract will take a large chunk of it, with the expectation that he’ll surpass the $10 million AAV per season.
