The Detroit Red Wings have made a deal with the St. Louis Blues, trading Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski for Oskar Sundqvist, Jake Walman, and a 2023 second-round pick.

Leddy was originally acquired earlier this season by the Wings from the New York Islanders in a deal that sent Richard Panik and a second-round pick the other way. He’s on the last season of a seven-year deal with a $5.5-million cap hit. Once a solid offensive defenseman, Leddy has a goal and 16 points in 55 games with the Wings this season.

The Wings also sent Witkowski to the Blues. He was probably more in the trade to make the roster space work than anything else. The veteran defenseman has bounced between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Detroit, playing 132 games over seven seasons.

Oskar Sundqvist is physical a middle-six forward with some solid production over the years. Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins, he was included in the deal that sent Ryan Reaves to Pittsburgh and has been a part of the Blues ever since. He only has four goals and 15 points in 41 games this season.

Jake Walman, a longtime prospect in St. Louis’ system, is a defenseman who’s slowly started to get more games in his career, with 32 of his 57 career NHL games coming this season. He has three goals and six points in that span.
