Blues name Robert Thomas 25th captain in franchise history

One of the top players in the game is going to lead his team onto the ice this season.

On Wednesday, the St. Louis Blues announced that the team has named Robert Thomas the team’s new captain, making him the 25th player in franchise history to wear the ‘C.’

Defensemen Colton Parayko and Philip Broberg, as well as forwards Jake Neighbours and Dylan Holloway, have been named assistant captains for the 2026-27 season.

Thomas takes over the role previously held by Brayden Schenn for the past three years. However, the captaincy became available after Schenn was dealt to the New York Islanders at last year’s trade deadline.

Thomas is one of the elder statesmen on the Blues roster, despite being just 27 years of age. He has been with the team since being taken in the first round, 20th overall, of the 2017 NHL Draft. He joined St. Louis in the fall of 2018 and found immediate success, helping the team win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup that spring. He has been a consistent scorer for a team that has been fairly mediocre in recent years, only qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs once in the past four seasons.

Yet, the Aurora, Ont. native has been an exceptional offensive weapon, averaging a point per game in the past three campaigns, notching 64 points in 64 appearances this past year.

It’s a little surprising that Thomas has been named captain, given that his name was involved in trade conversations last season. However, the former London Knight claimed he was never asked to waive his no-move clause, stating that he’s committed to the St. Louis franchise for the long haul.

In 530 regular-season games, all with the Blues, Thomas has scored 132 goals and 328 assists for 460 points, with another 26 points in 52 postseason contests.

Thomas will be seen wearing the ‘C’ for the first time during the regular season Oct. 2, when the Blues open their 2026-27 campaign against the Dallas Stars.
