Two Game 5’s on the agenda, and neither one disappointed, with one team moving on in overtime.

Missed anything? Here’s a recap of the night’s action.

Hurricanes take 3-2 series lead in another low-scoring affair with Rangers

This second round series between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers has not had many goals. In fact, the most goals scored in a single game was five, coming in Game 4. But when the Hurricanes are one of the best at limiting scoring chances against (mostly due to their aggressive forecheck), and the Rangers have one of the best goalies in Igor Shesterkin to cover up for any of their mistakes, it’s easy to see why that’s the case.

That trend continued in Game 5, as we had just four goals. The two teams exchanged goals in the first period, with Vincent Trocheck giving the Canes the lead, and Mika Zibanejad tying it late in the frame.

The game-winning goal came midway through the second period, as Teuvo Teravainen scored on the power play to give the Canes the 2-1 lead.

While the Rangers never quite pressured for the tying goal (they finished the game doubled in shots 34-17), Andrei Svechnikov made life a bit easier for the Canes, giving them a two goal lead with only seven minutes left in the game. It felt like a safe lead considering how well the Canes were playing, and how poorly the Rangers were, and it was, as the Canes take the game 3-1, and take a 3-2 series lead.

McDavid advances Oilers to Conference final after controversial no-goal

The Battle of Alberta delivered yet another spectacular game, but unfortunately the ending means that we no longer get to experience the Battle of Alberta.

As usual with this series, there’s a lot to get through. The Flames looked like they were ready to mount the 3-1 series comeback early, scoring the first two goals of the game in the first and second thanks to Andrew Mangiapane and Mikael Backlund. The Oilers would get that back quickly, as Darnell Nurse and Jesse Puljujarvi got goals within four minutes of Backlund’s to tie it.

Then, chaos ensued, even by the Battle of Alberta’s standards, as the Flames and Oilers combined for four goals in 1:11. Zach Hyman gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead on the power play, but just 15 seconds later, Johnny Gaudreau got it back. Calle Jarnkrok gave the Flames the lead with his first goal as a Flame 16 seconds later, but then, after an excruciatingly long 40 seconds, Evan Bouchard scored to tie the game again.

In a shocking turn of events, the third period was scoreless for a majority of it until Backlund would make his signature drive to the net move, and Blake Coleman would bury the rebound with his skate. But the officials reviewed it and determined that it was a kicking motion, waving off the goal and sending it to overtime. Was it a good goal, or were the refs correct in overturning it?

Add that overturned goal to the list of no-goals that will haunt Flames fans, as the Oilers made no mistake after that, and finished off the game in overtime with a goal from who else but Connor McDavid. With that, the Oilers move on to play the winner of the series between the Colorado Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues.
