Stars’ Jim Nill wins 2024 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award

Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill has won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.
Nill won the same award in 2022-23.
The award honors the general manager who best excels at their role during the regular season. The Stars finished the 2023-24 campaign with a 52-21-9 record, winning the Central division. Dallas’ 113 points were just one back of the New York Rangers for the President’s trophy. After the successful regular season the Stars were eliminated in six games at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers.
Nill took over as Stars GM in 2013 and has never been shy of a bold move in his 11-year tenure and has done a great job drafting and developing home-grown talent.
Heading into this season, Nill signed free agent forwards Sam Steel, Craig Smith and Matt Duchene to one-year contracts. All three players contributed throughout the season including Duchene, who had a bounce-back year recording 65 points in 80 games. Dallas also enjoyed breakout seasons from Wyatt Johnston and Logan Stankoven, two 2021 draft picks who have quickly become core players for the Stars.
Another big move for the Stars this season was when Nill acquired shut-down defenseman Chris Tanev in a three-team trade which along with the Calgary Flames included the New Jersey Devils. Tanev fit in perfectly with the Stars’ dressing room and was an impact player down the stretch of the season and throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Dating back some of Nill’s most notable transactions include acquiring Tyler Seguin in 2013, drafting Roope Hintz in 2015 and following that up in 2017, drafting the trio of Miro Heiskanen, Jake Oettinger and Jason Robertson.
Heading into next season, Dallas continues to be one of the teams to beat in the Western Conference. Nill is a four-time finalist and when he hasn’t taken home top prize, was voted third in both 2016 and 2020.
