Roman Josi named captain of Switzerland’s men’s Olympic hockey team

Switzerland announced their leadership group for the men’s ice hockey team at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Wednesday, with Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi being named the captain of the team.

Los Angeles Kings winger Kevin Fiala, New Jersey Devils center Nico Hischier, Winnipeg Jets winger Nino Niederreiter and Fribourg-Gotteron HC defenseman Andrea Glauser were named the alternate captains for Switzerland.
Josi is competing in his second Olympic games, also doing so in 2014 in Sochi. He’s worn the ‘C’ for Switzerland previously at the 2024 World Championship, and has been the captain of the Predators for nine seasons. He has 11 goals, 28 assists and 39 points in 45 games, and is the all-time leading Swiss scorer in the NHL.
Fiala has never been named an alternate captain in his professional career, but has worn the ‘A’ for Switzerland at the 2015 World Juniors. He has 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points in 56 games this season with the Kings, and is second behind Josi in Swiss scoring in NHL history.
Hischier has worn a letter in five consecutive World Championships, including the captaincy at in 2022 and 2025. He’s also been the captain of the Devils for the last six seasons. He has 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points in 57 games this season, and is fourth all-time in scoring among Swiss players in the NHL.
Niederreiter is competing in his second Olympic games, also doing so in 2014, and has worn a letter three times at the World Championship, including the captaincy in 2023 and the alternate captaincy in 2018 and 2024. He has eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 55 games with the Jets this season, and is third all-time in scoring among among Swiss players in the NHL.
Glauser wore the ‘C’ prior to Hischier joining the World Championship in 2025, his only instance of wearing a letter for Switzerland at the senior level. He has two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in 28 games for Fribourg-Gotteron in the National League this season.
Switzerland will open their tournament on Thursday against France at 6:10 a.m. ET.
