Canada’s McDavid sets new single-tournament Olympic hockey record for points in NHL era

The Canada forward assisted on Sam Reinhart’s goal midway through the second period of their semifinal matchup against Finland on Friday, giving him his 12th point of the tournament, which set a new Olympic record for tournaments involving NHLers.

He now has two goals and 10 assists. The previous record was 11, held by Finnish forwards Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu, who each hit the 11-point mark at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.
Before Friday’s game, Canada announced that captain Sidney Crosby would miss their semifinal matchup against Finland, and that McDavid would serve as captain.

While this is McDavid’s first Olympic experience, he has represented Canada on a number of occasions, including last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, where he recorded three goals and two assists for five points.
He has also played in two World Championships (2016 and 2018), where in 20 career games, he’s recorded six goals and 20 assists for 26 points. He helped earn a championship in 2016.
