The Daily Faceoff Show: Alex Ovechkin could win his first Lady Byng Trophy

Could Alex Ovechkin win a new trophy this season?

He’s won the Rocket Richard many times, the Hart Trophy three times, and the Stanley Cup along with the Conn Smythe. Bryce Salvador talked on Monday’s episode of The Daily Faceoff Show that Ovechkin could find himself in the mix to win the Lady Byng Trophy for the first time in his career.

Seravalli: “Bryce, Alex Ovechkin’s trophy case is full, but you’re thinking that he could be in the running for yet another award?”

Salvador: “When you look at what he’s done this year, you’re seeing an Ovi 2.0.

The goals-per-game (0.78) is the second-best of his career. Assists-per-game (0.83), number one. Points-per-game (1.61), number one. This Ovi has rejuvenated himself, he’s reinvented himself.

And then, if you look at his PIMs-per-game (0.11), it’s the lowest in the 17 seasons of his career. Look at how that compares to recent Lady Byng winners. This PIMs-per-game rate by Ovechkin so far this season fits right in there.
