The Detroit Red Wings are in an absolute freefall at the worst time

One of the feel-good stories from the early part of the season was the revamped Detroit Red Wings powering their way toward a return to the postseason.

At one point, Detroit was in the top three in the Atlantic Division, headlined by a solid month of February when they won seven of 10 games. However, since that hot stretch, the season has turned on a dime in Motown.

The Wings have lost each of their last six games, a season-high, including getting smacked around, 7-3, by the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. They have been shut out twice, falling to the Florida Panthers and Arizona Coyotes, and have fallen out of a Wild Card spot.

Currently, Detroit (33-26-6) is tied with the New York Islanders with 72 points, but with more games played, the Red Wings find themselves ninth in the Eastern Conference.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Colby Cohen and Tyler Yaremchuk give their thoughts on what is going wrong in Hockeytown.

Tyler Yaremchuk: They’ve struggled basically since Dylan Larkin has been out of the lineup. Since they lost their captain, they’re being outscored, on average, 5.75-2. They aren’t scoring, they aren’t defending, they aren’t getting a save. Does this Wings team have it in them to turn things around quickly?

Colby Cohen: I’m a little concerned about this team, and one of the biggest red flags about the Detroit Red Wings is that Steve Yzerman is incredibly inactive at the trade deadline. I think we’ve seen over the years that he’s got a plan, and he’s gonna rush it, and if he doesn’t think his team is really there, he’s not gonna pull the trigger and make any moves.

Tyler: [Patrick] Kane cools off, Larkin goes down with an injury, the goaltenders turn into a pumpkin…it’s just one thing after another.
