The Flames signed Hanifin to six-year extension

The Calgary Flames signed defenseman Noah Hanifin to a six-year, $29.7 million ($4.95M AAV) on Thursday night.

The Flames acquired Hanifin from the Carolina Hurricanes in late-June trade. Calgary gave up Dougie Hamilton, Michael Ferland and Adam Fox and received the 21-year-old defenseman and forward Elias Lindholm.

Hanifin is coming off of the best offensive season of his young career, picking up 10 goals and 22 assists (32 points) in 79 games with Carolina. The former fifth overall pick (2015 Draft) had fantastic possession numbers last season, posting a 56.5 CorsiFor% and a +2.8 relative Corsi on one of the league’s top possession teams.

And Hanifin’s numbers are only this “good” because his one good season – last year – he put up favourable results as possibly one of the most sheltered defenders in the league.

Hanifin is part of a loaded left-side of the Flames blueline that also includes Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie. He has the tools to post double-digit goals, 25-plus assists and will pick up close to one hit and blocked shot per game.
