The New York Rangers have finalized plans to buy out the final year of defenseman Tony DeAngelo’s contract, set to become official once the first buyout window opens 24 hours after the Stanley Cup Final concludes.
DeAngelo has had a problematic career, ranging from getting suspended in the OHL for using a racial slur against an opponent to getting suspended for abuse of an official while playing for the Arizona Coyotes. Most recently, DeAngelo was shunned from the Rangers after getting into an altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev following a loss back in January.
He only played six games with the Rangers in 2021 and cleared through waivers.
DeAngelo signed a two-year deal with the Rangers in October of 2020 worth $4,800,000 annually. When he’s bought out, he’ll cost the Rangers $383,334 against the cap in 2021-22 and $883,334 in 2022023. New York already has $4,044,444 in dead money on the books for 2021-22 from buying out Henrik Lundqvist, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Dan Girardi, but this is a small price to pay to get rid of a major distraction.
